Curriculum

By providing a wide range of programmes, Broadgreen endeavours to give each student the opportunity to learn skills, knowledge and develop positive attitudes to learning.  Through a varied curriculum students will be able to develop personal interests, build independence, self confidence and increasing responsibility for their own learning.

English

Broadgreen provides a variety of language and reading experiences for students through oral, written and visual language programmes.  Support reading programmes are offered.

  • School Magazine
  • School Radio

Gifted and Talented Education

Broadgreen identifies gifted and talented students to support their learning.

Classroom teachers provide programmes to extend and meet the needs of gifted and talented students in their classrooms.

 School wide programmes target gifted and talented students in key areas.  A brochure is available at the school office.

Environmental Education

Students focus on environment issues and concerns at local and school level..  Topics include:

  • Sustainability
  • Recycling
  • Zero waste.

Information and Communication Technology

Our programme enhances the development of information literacy by providing opportunities for students in a range of technologies integrated across the curriculum. 

These include:

  • ICAS Computer examination
  • Radio Station
  • The Loop

Health

Our programme provides students with the knowledge and understanding of good health so they can take increasing responsibility for their own needs.

Topics include:

  • Building Resiliency
  • Pubertal Change
  • Keeping Ourselves Safe
  • Eating for Health
  • Relating to Others
  • Health and Drug Education
  • Mental Health
  • Sexuality Education (odd year)

Languages

Each year we offer an opportunity for students to learn a language.  These include:

Outside The Classroom

Opportunities include:

Mathematics

Students are grouped with others of similar need for numeracy. 

Practical mathematics is further developed in technicraft areas.  Opportunities include:

  • ICAS Maths competition
  • Broadgreen Mathix
  • Nelson Mathix
  • Otago Problem Solving Challenge. 

Music

Opportunities Include:

  • Choir
  • Productions
  • Music competitions
  • Concerts to the public
  • Instrumental and dance groups
  • Instrumental tuition

Classes are offered for tuition in musical instruments.  An information evening will be held early in term 1.

Physical Education/Sports

Opportunities are provided for participation and competitive physical activity.

Science

Programmes are designed to emphasise planning, experimentation and discovery with a practical approach where appropriate.  We have a wide variety of science resources including a laboratory.

 The programme includes biennial science fair for all students.

Social Sciences

Social Sciences develop students understanding of people and their interactions with others and their environment

Te Reo me Ona Tikanga Maori

Each classroom programme integrates Maori language and culture across the curriculum.

Topics include:

  • Conversational Maori (Korero)
  • Greetings (Mihimihi)
  • Local places (Wahi Maori)
  • Historical legends (Pakiwaitara)
  • Waiata (Songs)
  • Leadership
  • Genealogy  (Whakapapa)

Te Maataahauariki (The Imminent Dawn)

Te Maataahauariki is Broadgreen’s Maori Performing Arts Group.  The members participate at a variety of levels. 

Opportunities include:

  • Performances
  • Powhiri
  • Formal occasions
  • Weekly group hui and wananga

Technology

Technology provides opportunities for students to develop and extend their ideas and to explore creative solutions to practical problems through  materials and food technology
